Captain Jonas Johnston was born on the Tar River. N.C. on the 19th October 1776; his father removed to South Carolina in 1768; about 1782 Jonas, then about 16 years of age, accompanied his father then a Capitan thought a severe engagements with a company of British, Indian's and Tories , by Wiggins' Hill near Burton's Ferry.
On the 4th of August 1793, Captain Johnston married Elizabeth, second daughter of William Tuten of Barnwell District and settled in the Pine Pipe Creek, now Lawtonville, where he resided ever since. The raised two sons and four daughters, Georgia to distant to attend. He accumulated a comfortable living which he enjoyed unenvied and unenvying for many of years without a known enemy. Observing strike the Saviors golden rule, in word and deed .
He was buried on his own farm where he had resided for 49 years, surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Few live to his age, still more few die so perfectly resigned. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, they rest from their labors and their works do low them"
