Son of Joseph Hitchcock Payne and Nancy S. Deming, EB was b. Vermont, lived part of his life in Illinois, then Wisconsin, where he enlisted in the Civil War. He lived in KS, IA, and IL, where he married Nancy/Nanie M. Burnell 06 May 1870. He moved to Berkeley, Alameda, CA about 1875, becoming pastor of the Congregational Church. Their dau Lynette was b. in 1879, either in IA or CA. EB returned to MA c1880 where he was a pastor at a number of Unitarian churches, having changed denominations. He returned to Berkeley around 1891 and became pastor of Berkeley's First Unitarian Church. His first wife d. in 1898 and he remarried in 1910 to Ninetta Wiley Eames, aunt of Charmian Kittredge London; he was a close friend to Jack and Charmian London. EB was editor of the Overland Monthly and other magazines/newspapers, a writer, and a founder of the California Utopian colony "Altruria." EB died of a heart attack while attending a lecture.
