James Edward was born as the 5th child of six to Wiley Anderson Murrell (Murrill, Merrill, etc.) and Mary Magdalen Honce/Hance/Huntz/Honts. His siblings included Eliz. Ann (1835-1917), John Henry (1837-1880), Mary Catherine (1839-1846), William Anderson (1841-1922), and Ann Elisy (1845-1892).
The family is found in Botetourt Co., VA in the 1840 & 1850 US Fed. censuses. James joined the Illinois Cavalry, Co. I, Reg. 11 as a private and was discharged 30 Sep 1865. James applied for a pension 14 July 1890 and was granted it as an invalid, App. No. 814988, cert. no. 573716.
James married Mary E. Robinson on 17 Nov 1867 in Pettis, MO. They had 6 children: William b. 1869, James R., 1871-1951, Ida J 1873-1917, Luther George 1877-1929, baby 1879-?, and Clifton Clemons b. 1882.
The family is found in Elk Fork, Pettis, MO in the 1870 & 1880 censuses, and in Calhoun, Henry, MO in 1900. In 1910 James was living with his son James & family at age 68, as his wife Mary d. in 1905.
In 1912 at age 70 James was in a US National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Delaware, Leavenworth, KS and is noted there through 1922. He may have d. in the home per Civil War pension record, but is buried in Calhoun, Henry, MO.
