Elijah F. Harvil was born Oct. 22, 1844, was married to Mary Ellen Godbey Dec. 5, 1869 and died Feb. 16, 1890.
Bro. Harvil was a member of the W. E. Church, south, and since I formed his acquaintance in 1879 has lived a consistent Christian life. He was always ready and willing to do his part in any neighborhood or church enterprise. He was seldom absent from the Sabbath School, Prayer Meeting, or Preaching service, as long as he was able to go, and always manifested great interest. In all of these, he will be greatly missed. But his family will miss him more than it is possible for the neighborhood and the church to miss him. He was a good man in every sense of the word, and the longer I knew him the better I loved him. He was so quiet, so unassuming, and yet so firm in his principles and in his faith. He was perfectly conscientious in all of his dealings with his fellow man, and perfectly reliable under any and all circumstances. He was among the few men in this country who formed and carried out the resolution of Joshua, "As for me and my house we will serve the Lord." But he is gone; his wife is a widow, his children are orphans, and his neighbors are bereft. May He who is too wise to err, and too good to do wrong, and who has declared that "all things work for good to them that love him", sustain and comfort his dear family, with whom we deeply sympathize, and to whom we tender the most sincere condolence.
