My Great-Grandmother was born in Bergo, Aland, an Island in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland. It is a possession of Finland, but the people consider themselves Swedish and the culture is Swedish. She arrived in America with her father, a Finnish sailor, on June 10, 1892 aboard the Steamship Gallia. Mother Mina was left at home until a homestead was established.
Father and daughter headed west to find a good place to settle. In the little town of Bluestone, Ohio, Anna met Alfred Johnson (Johanson), a young Swede who had arrived from the old country at about the same time. They married in 1896 and had two children; daughter Hildur and son Alfonse (my Grandfather), before moving westward again. They eventually homesteaded a piece of land on Devil's lake just outside the little village of Haugen, Wisconsin. Here they raised 12 children. The farm they built is still family-owned today.
I never knew my Great-Grandmother, but I am told that she was a sweet and gentle person.
