Birth: 1839
Rush
County Dublin, Ireland
Death: Jun. 11, 1914, New Zealand

Patrick Thomas Carroll was born in Rush, County Dublin, Ireland in the year 1839 the son of Michael Carroll and Eleanor Russell. Some records show, however, that he was born 1841. In his early years Patrick was said to have migrated to and explored many of the areas in Canada; possibly seeking gold. He later again migrated, to the United States and was there when the American Civil War broke out.

During the American Civil War, Patrick was said to have served in the Union Army and was present in Washington, D.C. when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Unfortunately no confirmation on any of the relevent data bases to date has been found of a Patrick Thomas Carroll; unless he enlisted under another name.

After the war, like so many others, Patrick Thomas Carroll left America and migrated a third time; to New Zealand. Patrick was one of a fast diminishing band of alluvial miners who arrived on the west coast of New Zealand in the 1860's. He followed the alluvial diggings in the Charleston, Grey Valley and Buller districts; arriving in the Westport area in 1901. On December 28, 1878 a daughter was born to Patrick Carroll at the Empire Hotel in Lyell.

Patrick was the brother of P.S. Carroll of Wellington and also the father of Andrew M. Carroll who later was a partner in the merchant firm of Carroll and O'Brien in Reefton, New Zealand.

On April 2, 1877 Patrick Thomas Carroll married Catherine (Kate) Power, 30 years of age, in the Catholic Church in Lyell, Buller, New Zealand. Catherine was born in 1848, at Ardnageehy, County Cork, Ireland. She died on September 1, 1915 at 70 years of age and was buried at Middle Orowaiti Cemetery, Westport, Buller, New Zealand; plot E 246+54.

Patrick and Catherine had six children, Andrew Michael born on November 16, 1878 and later married Margaret Boyle, on April 24, 1906 at St Patricks Church, Ross, New Zealand; Mary Ann Agnes born December 22, 1880 at Reefton, Buller, New Zealand; Margaret Ann born April 1, 1882 at Reefton, Buller, New Zealand; Patrick Stephen born December 26, 1883 at Reefton, Buller, New Zealand and later married Jenny Louise Anderson on August 9, 1911 at Eketahuna, New Zealand; Williqam Joseph born April 17, 1885 at Reefton, Buller, New Zealand; and Catherine Honora born on October 5, 1888 at Reefton, Buller, New Zealand.

Patrick hand been sick for some two years before his death, suffering from tonsillitis emphysema, which was an inflammation of the tonsils that caused swelling, produced by gas diffused in the cellular tissue, and arterial atheroma, an accumulation and swelling of fatty, fibrous deposits that developed on his artery linings; being treated by Doctor R.B.P. Mouson. For the last year his health was complicated by morbis cordis, a catch-all phrase for death by natural causes of heart disease when the exact cause is not evident; that killed him.

When Patrick Thomas Carroll was said to have died at 75 years of age in Westport, New Zealand on June 11, 1914, while other records indicate he was 73 years of age; his occupation being listed that of a "Mainer". His death certificate, however, records his death as 70 years of age. Patrick Thomas Carroll was buried on June 13, 1914 in the Orowaiti Middle Cemetery
