|Death: ||Dec. 2, 1885|
Born at Antrim, Ireland. Originally served in the United States Army, having enlisted at Oswego, New York, May 15, 1855. Served in company A, 8th United States Infantry. Re-enlisted in 1860 for a further period of 5 years. Stationed at several locations, including Fort Hamilton, New York, Fort Davis, Texas and at Camp Hudson, Texas.
Discharged June 30, 1861, and switched sides, at the commencement of the Civil War, enlisting September 11, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana, in the 13th Louisiana Infantry. His service may have been only for a brief period, and it is quite possible that he may have deserted, as he later married Mary Price at Melbourne, Victoria, in Australia, about 1861 (at the age of 30), and remembering that a trip from America to Australia, in those days, took some three months. Their daughter, Clara, was born in 1862.
Francis died in 1885 at Belfast, Victoria. Although his middle name was, on several occasions, shown as Steven, all available records, including death certificate, show no such middle name.
