John Oldham Robinett was born on 12 May 1887 in Huntsville, Texas. His parents were John Wesley Robinett and Anne H. Abernathy, both natives of Huntsville. His grandparents were David W. Robinett, of Huntsville, originally from Virginia and Elizabeth Clements originally from Georgia and James Abernathy, of Huntsville, originally of Tennessee, and Elizabeth Shelton, also of Tennessee.
As a boy John grew up in a town whose main notoriety was the place where condemned prisoners from the Texas Dept. of Corrections were executed. John told stories of how the city lights would dim when a person was executed in the electric chair. He had a handsome cedar chest with the Robinett name on the lid carved by those prisoners.
When grown John moved to Clarksville, Texas in the early 1900s and worked as a bookkeeper for the Goodman Brothers. It was there that he met his future wife, Vera Leontine Brewer and before 1912 they were married and soon had a daughter Vera Elizabeth in 1912. In 1915 they had another daughter Verna Louise. In 1917 during the Great War John registered for the draft, but was 36 years old with two children and was not selected for service.
After the war the family moved to the 2300 block of Pierce Ave in Houston, Texas. Their daughter, Verna, remembered as a child putting pennies on the streetcar tracks in front of their house, then collecting the squashed coins for keepsakes. Before 1920 they moved to 4600 La Branch St. where they stayed for the rest of their lives. In 1924 they had their final child John Henry.
John was a career insurance salesman for Bankers Life insurance Company, a 32 Degree Mason and a member of the Arabian Temple of Houston.
He died on November 29, 1962 in Houston Texas after a short illness.
