From Pension Record S 40.873.:
On 30 Aug. 1820 in Wayne Co. Pa. Henry Curtis, alias Henry Bass, stated he was 76 years old and living in Canaan Twp. He stated that he had enlisted in Capt. Aaron Austin's Co. of Col. Courtland's Regt. of the First NY, Rgt. He stated that in 1773 he emigrated from Germany to Great Britain. He was there "pressed" and put a board a British man of war vessel. In 1774 he deserted this vessel when it was lying off the coast of Boston and assumed the name of Henry Bass. It was under this name he enlisted at Ft. Stanwix, NY. He was discharged under the name of Henry Bass of Newburgh, NY. He stated his discharge papers have since been destroyed. He also said he was with General Sullivan in Lake County and the taking of Cornwallis. Soon after discharge, he resumed his original and proper name, Henry Curtis, by which he has since been known. He stated his wife was 60 years of age and infirm. He had no children living [near?] him or who contributes to his support, except one who worked on the farm. He stated he was reduced in circumstances and needed the assistance of his country for support. His pension was granted.
