Birth: Jan. 8, 1925
Glendale
Los Angeles County
California, USA
Death: Jun. 16, 1944, Northern Mariana Islands

James Walter "Jimmy" Burgess was b. in Glendale, California where his father, James Franklin Burgess was owner of Jim's Resturant, and later had another one in a bowling alley.

Jimmy enlisted on the 13th of July in 1943, probably in the City of Los Angeles, a whole year before he would have graduated from high school. He, soon, was sent to a boot camp and then to an infantry training school.
[copies of his DD-214 have been sent for.]

He, then, must have been sent to Pearl Harbour in Hawaii as that is where his unit, the 105th Inf. Regt., 27th Inf. Div. was being organized with mostly men from New York.

The 27th Inf. Division was enjoined with a total of about 71,000 U.S. Troops, incl. the 2nd & 4th Marine Divisions, Sailors, Sea Bees, and MANY ships to leave Pearl Harbour on the 5th of June 1944 for the South Pacific.

The big guys in Washington, earlier, had planned to by-pass Saipan and the other Northern Mariana Islands, but they, later, realized the value of Saipan to enable them to fly to Japan from those islands.

When the Navy Armada was a few miles from Saipan, @ 0700 hrs. on the 15th of June, they rec'd orders to go ashore and take the Island of Saipan. Jimmy's unit went ashore on the 16th to take over the Japanese Aslito Airfield. When the battle was over, 2,949 men were killed and more wounded. I assume that Jimmy lost his life on the 16th.

Imagine the logistics of seeing that all of our men were identified, and burial plans were made. What a job for Graves & Registration.

Jimmy's mom, Gertrude E. GARDNER Burgess was still living @ #1203 South Orange Street in Glendale when she was notified of his death. She asked that Jimmy's remains be returned to Glendale.
