CHAPIN Memorial service for Jackson LaVelle Barwick Jr., 87, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mr. Barwick died Saturday, June 23, 2012. Born September 28, 1924, in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of the late Jackson LaVelle Barwick Sr. and Evelyn Adams Barwick. He was senior partner of Belser, Baker, Barwick, Ravenel & Bender in Columbia until his retirement in 2000.
He attended public schools in Atlanta, graduating from Tech High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943-1945 as a B29 Bombardier/ Navigator. As a young boy, he delivered postal telegraph messages by bicycle. He worked at the Varsity Drive-in in Athens, Georgia while a student at University of Georgia. He graduated in 1948 from the University of Georgia with an AB Degree, majoring in Political Science. He attended the University of Georgia Law School, was a member of the Georgia Law Review and received a LLB Degree from the University of Southern California in 1949.
He was employed from 1949-1950 as an insurance adjuster with the Insurance Company of North America, Los Angeles, California and with United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company as Adjuster Assistant Superintendent, Claims Examiner and Claims Superintendent from 1950 to 1969. He was admitted to Georgia Bar in 1951, South Carolina Bar in 1969, the U.S. District and Circuit Courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a member of American Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, Richland County Bar Association and Georgia Bar Association. He was the Past President of Columbia Claims Association, South Carolina Claims Association and Claims Management Association of South Carolina. In addition, he was Past President of South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association and was a recipient of the third annual Hemphill Award, sponsored by the S.C. Defense Trial Attorneys' Association. Given in honor of the late U.S. Judge Robert W. Hemphill, the award was presented to him for distinguished and meritorious service to the legal profession and the public.
Mr. Barwick was an Elder at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church in Chapin. He married Nan Rutledge in Childress, Texas in 1945 and they recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
Surviving are his wife, Nina "Nan" Rutledge Barwick; children, Jack L. Barwick III (Sandra) of Richmond Hill, Ga., Larry Barwick (Debbie) of Cameron, Janina Barwick Grimsley (Alan) of Columbia, Kimi Barwick Daly (Mike) of Chapin, Andy Barwick of Chapin; grandchildren, Gina Abbott, Lisa Murray, Jason (Sarah) and Jeremy (Regina) Barwick, Todd Simpson, Kendall Deaver, Adam and Jaime Barwick, Alyssa Colchin (Roger), Adrienn Grimsley, Cameron and Tagan Daly, Laney Barwick; five great-grandchildren, Logan Abbott, Walker Deaver, Chase Murray, Zachary Abbott and Hayden Murray. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Tillie Barwick Grist.
