Amy Ann Brooks and her twin sister, Emeline Brooks were born March 12, 1814 in Frankfort Township, Sussex Co., NJ to Justus and Fannie (Allison) Brooks. Her father, a sea captain, died at sea when the twins were quite young. Amy Ann and Emeline went to Huron Co., OH to live with an older sister, Abigail and her husband, Richard Allison. When the cholera epidemic hit both Jesse and Betsy Andrews in 1834 both Amy Ann and Emeline volunteered theirs services to tend the Andrews family. Thus meeting two of the sons, Richard and Josiah Andrews. The twins and the Andrews brothers were married on November 1, 1834 at the home of Eliphalet Brooks (their brother) in Peru, Huron Co., OH.
