Bernard was one of four children born to Bernhardt Imanuel Ostby and Edith Mamie Monear Ostby in Minnesota. Along with his brothers Earl and Clarence and sister Muriel, Bernard grew up farming outside of Albert Lea, Minnesota. His parents divorced sometime in the early 1920s, and Bernard stayed with his father and brothers after the split, while his mother and Muriel moved a few houses away.
Bernard met and married Alice Sylvia Olson and set up house in Albert Lea. In 1927, they took in Estelle Ostby, daughter of Bernard's brother Earl, after Earl's wife took sick and died. Bernard and Alice became Estelle's adoptive parents when Earl left the state and moved to California by himself. Earl did attempt to return once after he remarried to regain custody of his daughter, but his attempts were rebuffed by the Minnesota courts, who decided that Estelle was best left with Bernard and Alice. Earl died in California in 1931.
Bernard and Alice had one natural child in 1931, a son they named Burton Allison but called "Burt." In 1936, Bernard took a job with Detroit Edison, Detroit's electric utility, and moved his family to Michigan. They remained there for the rest of their lives, though they made frequent trips to Minnesota to visit family in the ensuing years, as evidenced by many blurbs about the family's visits in the Albert Lea newspaper's social pages.
Bernard and Alice moved to northern Michigan after his retirement and settled in the Alpena area. He eventually was a grandfather of ten.
Bernard was my great-grandfather, but he died the year before I was born and so I never met him. My mother remembers him as a quiet and thoughtful man, a homebody. My great-grandmother loved him very much, and though she outlived him by fourteen years, she never remarried. She died in 1994 and they are buried side-by-side. Also next to the couple is their son, Burt, who passed in 2006. Their adoptive daughter Estelle Ostby Leigh is buried in nearby Alpena with her husband George.
Thanks to Teresa Bernard for snapping a photo of the grave.
