Lucille was born on June 10, 1911 in Ringgold, Louisiana and passed away on Nov. 14 in McAllen, TX. She was the daughter of Andrew Nelson Pate and Ollie Corley Pate. She was born and lived most of her life in Ringgold although the last few years were spent with her daughter in Mission, Texas. Her maternal grandfather William Thomas "W.T." Corley donated the land for Pleasant Grove Church and Cemetery. Lucille loved Ringgold and even as her Alzheimer's progressed she always wanted to go home to Ringgold.
She worked at Shriner's Hospital for Cripple Children until her marriage to Leonard C. Marler. When they divorced, she moved back to Ringgold and became a nurse at Fletcher Clinic. Later she married Ernest C. Wheeler. After her daughter's high school graduation, Lucille fulfilled a dream to go to nursing school. She earned her LPN at Schumpert Hospital and worked in the nursery there until she left to provide full-time care for her husband. For many years afterwards she sewed for the community and is still remembered by many of her customers. Always a caregiver, she helped care for her parents in their later years and also cared for her step-son and his wife before their deaths.
Preceding Lucille in death were her parents; Ernest, her husband of 25 years; four brothers: Emmitt, Claude (Eloyce Davis), Fred (Lavon Corley), and Basil (Norma Woodard and Almeeta Barnett Adams); one sister Seidell (Elwood Boyet); one step-son Leland H. "Pete" (Elizabeth Tomme); one step-daughter Louise Wheeler (Emmett); and step-grandson-in-law, Bobby Roberts.
Lucille is survived by her son, Donald C. Marler (Barbara Adams Bergeron) of Houma; daughter, Janice M. Marler of Mission, TX; her former son-in-law, Hue McCoy (Pat) of Las Cruces, NM; former daughter-in-law, Gisela Marler of Alabama; three grandsons: Donnie (Marsha) Marler of Dodson, Joseph (Becky) McCoy of McAllen, TX, and Don McCoy (Deb Robinson) of Las Cruces; three granddaughters: MarJan Marler (Ross) Wiggins of Ringgold, Melinda Marler Ackley of Bossier City, and Ann McCoy (Charles Schneider) of Wilmington, DE; a step-granddaughter, Sophia Roberts of Bossier City; and step-grandson, Donald Brooks (Charlene) Sorrells of Shreveport. She is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren one of which is her namesake (Helen Lucille "Lucy" McCoy), nine step-great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; three nephews, Terry Pate of McKinney, TX, Wayne Boyet of Ringgold, and Glen Pate of Germany; and one niece Eva Pate Scogin of Hall Summit; as well as many other family members and friends.
We also thank the staff at Ringgold Nurse Care and Rehabilitation Center for their care when she was there, the staff of Briarcliff Nursing Home in McAllen, TX for their care, and Dr. Matthew Johnson of Mission, TX for his care. In addition, special thanks go to her caregiver Ruth Peterson and her family for loving her as a grandmother.
Pallbearers will be Joe McCoy, Donald Brooks Sorrells, Tom Sorrells, Donnie Marler, Terry Pate, and Ross Wiggins.
