Norma Jean Gruhl Blades, 91, Anderson.
Norma Jean (Gruhl) Blades, 91, Anderson, died August 7, 2009 at Community Hospital, Anderson after a brief illness.
Born October 29, 1917 to Homer and Nana Gruhl in Hope, Indiana, she graduated in 1935 from Hope High School.
Norma married her high school sweetheart, Lewis "Louie" Blades on September 2, 1939. She worked at Stafford Grain Company in Hope during the early 40's while her husband served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot during World War II.
After the war, she and Louie moved to Indianapolis, Brookston and Bloomington, finally settling in Anderson in 1955. During the 60's and 70's she was employed at F.W. Woolworths.
She was a member of Hope Moravian Church and Anderson Central Christian Church. She was a member of the Central Christian Church Women's Circle and a former member of Kappa, Kappa, Sigma Sorority.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Whitinger of Anderson; grandchildren, Susan (Erik) Kidd of Anderson, Diane Whitinger of Mission, TX and David (Kelly) Whitinger of Pendleton; great grandchildren, Tyler Showalter, Regan Kidd, Abbey Kidd, Sophie Kidd, Andrew Whitinger and Lexi Whitinger; sister-in-law, Mary Scheidt of Columbus, IN; special friends, Jay Sickels, Alda and Christine Leakey and Linda Swick; and "Aunt Jean" to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her husband, Louie Blades, in 1987; son, Steven R. Blades in 1997; and brother Robert Gruhl in 1999.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2009 at Robert D. Loose Funeral Home, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson.
Services will be Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home's south chapel, with Rev. Rick Vale officiating. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, Hope, Indiana with Rev. Krauss officiating .
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
