Gisela Lindecke
Birth: Apr. 11, 1920
Berlin, Germany
Death: Jul. 2, 2011
Gummersbach
Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany

Gisela Lindecke was my first head teacher when I changed school from the beginner's school (a period of 4 years altogether in Germany).

I remember that I was actually scared of how much bigger the grammar school/college was, when I first entered the building. With many more students, I felt fairly lost, and would probably have been very unhappy if it had not been for Mrs Lindecke who helped me whenever she could.

For reasons that I cannot explain, I was one of her much loved and certainly favourized students, and I can only guess that this was because of that strange mixture of extreme shyness and industriousness I showed.

While I cannot say that it was an easy thing to be 'brandmarked' as the teacher's darling, and my classmates often gave me a hard time, altogether I knew that nothing serious was going to happen as long as Mrs Lindecke was around.

When I joined our local Gymnasium in 1971, Mrs Lindecke was already a lady of 51, but always up to some nonsense. She had this great sense of humour and loved to entertain us, yet insisting on our total concentration whenever she tried to teach us something. And without raising her voice, she always got the attention she expected by speaking rather softly and then, all of a sudden, interrupting her speech and just glaring around.

Amongst the students, I was perhaps the only one who ever got the privilege of visiting her and her beloved mother in their home. Mrs Lindecke took care of her mother after her father's death, and I would not have been surprised if Mrs Lindecke had reached the magical age of 100, as her mother passed away when she was over 100.

However, this was not to be, and along with her niece and family, many old colleagues and those pupils who loved and admired her and owe her as much as I do, I mourn a wonderful beloved teacher who had a heart of gold.
