Michael was the son of Jochen and Milli Günster and the elder brother of Jutta.
Thinking back, closing my eyes, I feel like everything has just happened, I can still recall Michael's smile and charms.
Dark-brown to black curls, beautiful eyes, he was a guy who managed to impress and charm anybody. Most girls I knew had a crush on him, and the fact that I did not was only due to reason. His sister being my best friend, I was scared of risking our wonderful friendship for a romance that might not have worked out, so we remained friends.
But Michael was not only frightfully handsome and authentic as can be. He also had this heart of gold, him and his sister joined the local Red Cross team in early teenage days to do voluntary work for the youth group. Because they both considered this work as something of importance.
Occasionally, and this is what happens between siblings, Michael and Jutta would have minor discussions, teasingly, and sometimes those small disputes developed to flaming rows.
One day, on Thursday, September 23, 1976, the two of them had a verbal fight, and following this Michael decided to take his motorbike and go for a ride.
He never returned, his life was taken in a very sad and tragic accident caused by the driver of a car.
I remember that I was on my way back home after our weekly dancing lesson. When I passed the local fire station, I saw a crowd of people standing there, police, ambulance, and I saw a body lying on the ground, covered with a blanket. Then I had no idea who that person was.
Soon after I had got home, one of Mum's friends called, she was crying and reported what had happened, as more or less our whole town was deeply shocked.
Well, ever since then I have been talking to Michael, asking him to find a way to get through to his sister. She has been suffering for so many years, putting all the blame on herself, as if she had forced him to go on that motorbike ride on that bad day.
And there is no convincing her that she is not the one to blame, nobody is. She simply cannot forget this idea of 'what would have happened if I had asked him to forgive me, would he have stayed at home? And how would he be like today?'.
The fact that nobody who has known Michael can ever forget him goes without saying, so now I focus my attention onto Jutta who needs to be built up every now and then. Whenever she cries her eyes out with all the pain and feeling of guilt.
A long time ago I promised myself that I shall look after her, make sure that one day she can live with the past and welcome it instead of letting her conscience hurting her again and again.
As far as Michael is concerned, however, I shall keep talking to him, and one day, of this I am sure, he will manage to let Jutta know that he is fine and that she does not have to worry for him.
Michael was buried on Monday, September 28, 1976.
I wish to thank all of you for kindly leaving flowers, tokens, pictures and lovely messages for Michael, it was such a relief to watch my friend last night, the evening that we issued this Memorial page, she was simply overwhelmed by all the attention and honouring for her brother. Maybe this way, one day, she will get her peace of mind, she deserves this plus the knowledge that her brother, too, never stopped loving her.
A special thank you to Karla Tschannen for kindly sponsoring this Memorial page, you touched Jutta's heart more than you will ever know.
THANK YOU, YOU ARE ALL WONDERFUL
