By 1920 James and his sister, Jesse Blanche were living in Paris, Edgar, Illinois with their Grandmother, Mary M. (Flowers) & Silas Combs. Between 1920 and 1942, his where abouts is unknown. It is known that James and Jesse were living in the Rose Home Orphanage for a short time. Each being adopted to different families.
By April of 1942, James entered the US Army and was deployed to France where he entered WWII. In Sept. of 1944, James passed away, and was buried in France. James did recieve a Purple Heart Medal.
James married Maude Ella Williams 17 Aug 1926 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana, & had a son, James Madison Ross II.
James married Carrie Carpenter 11 April 1942.
