Gwendolyn Elizabeth Tooman Kelly
Funeral services for Gwen Tooman Kelly, 95, of Carnegie were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Carnegie with Rev. Richard Tinker officiating.
Gwen was born six miles north of Carnegie on August 25, 1912 to Sam Tooman and Nora (McNabb) Tooman. She graduated from Carnegie High School in May of 1929. At the last Carnegie Alumni in April she was the oldest Carnegie High School graduate in Attendance. She was very proud of being 95 years young. She passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 in the Carnegie Hospital after a short illness.
Gwen married William Earl Kelly in Oklahoma City on January 7, 1932. They made their home in Carnegie and eventually owned and operated Kelly Motor Company until it sold around 1958. Earl preceded Gwen in death on September 19, 1968.
Gwen loved her family, her church and her community. She was the backbone of the Carnegie United Fund. He tireless efforts through the Carnegie United Fund have provided school children with glasses and fire and flood victims with monetary assistance. Through the years Gwen was very active in the Carnegie community helping with the Fine Arts exhibits during the Annual Carnegie Tri-County Free Fair. She was also volunteer at the Carnegie Grade School by reading to the younger students. She also enjoyed playing bridge with different groups of friends (even Teaching some new ladies to play). In 2004, the town recognized Gwen's devotion to the Carnegie community by honoring her with the B.W. Jolly Honorary Citizenship Award. Gwen loved her church and was very proud that she had four generations in church every Sunday.
Her love for her family was very evident. She prepared Sunday lunch for her family of 13 almost every Sunday. He great grandchildren were the pride of her life. All of her family and others referred to her as Mom Kelly.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Carl (Sonny) Tooman, and two sisters, Cecil Johnson and Mildred Purdy.
She is survived by her older sister (98 years young)Edgar (Pete) Burnes of Garden Grove, California; her daughter, Nancy Kaye Hurt Williams and husband, Orval, and P.K. Hurt and wife, Natalie; three great grandchildren, Lance Williams and special friend, Kandice Isom and Chaz and Chason Hurt, all of Carnegie; also included is a special "adopted" grandson, Buddy Reed and wife, Margaret and children Jeannie and Katee Ann of Carnegie.
Burial was in the Carnegie Cemetery under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home of Carnegie.
