At the time of his birth he was born in what then was the Pickens District, SC. His father Pvt Aaron Cain, was killed in the civil war at the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864 between 3:30 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. by an explosion set off in a tunnel dug underneath his regiment by union forces. He was 11 years old. Aaron's younger brother Pvt Joel Cain of the same Regiment was killed by the explosion at the same time. He married Anna Louiza Gibson on May 12, 1872, in Seneca, Oconee County, SC.
