Death: Sep. 2, 1879

She was born at "the Bower" in West Virginia. Her father entertained Major General J.E.B. Stuart on his land many times. Stuart and his men used the Bower as winter headquarters many times. In September of 1862 Sarah Pendleton Dandridge was engaged to Major John Pelham on one of those occasions. He was anointed by General Robert E. Lee with the title of "the Gallant Pelham," for his heroics on the battlefield during the War Between the States. Pelham was the Commander of artillery for Major General J.E.B. Stuart and AKA the boy genius of artillery. Sally, as she was called, was devastated when he was killed on 17 Mar 1863.

She later married a young lawyer, Blackburn Hughes, in the late 1870's and continued to live at her home in Martinsburg until her death in 1879. She delivered several stillborn children and then succumbed to her own death during childbirth. Her last child died during childbirth as well. She lived only 17 years after John Pelham died. That was a lot of grief for a young woman.
