Thomas Orin Gargus
(August 26, 1937 - August 8, 2011)

Thomas Orin Gargus was born Aug. 26, 1937, the son of Thomas J. and Lillian N. (Hackler) Gargus. He died Aug. 8, 2011, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

He graduated from Windyville High School in 1955. He served a tour of duty in the Army, spending some time in Korea.

He married Nedra on Aug. 1, 1964. They lived in Independence for a time and moved back to the Windyville area in the early 1970s to raise their family.

He was an active member of the Windyville Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a deacon in 1977. He loved the Lord and enjoyed spending his time studying the Bible and sharing his faith through teaching and singing.

He was a precision machinist by trade and retired from Detroit Tool in Lebanon in 2002. He spent his hours off of the clock working on his farm, helping family, friends and neighbors. After retirement, he discovered golf, which he enjoyed playing with his brothers and son-in-law. He also found immense joy in his role as a loving grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Nedra; his children: Scott and Melissa Gargus and Darrin and Jane (Gargus) Griffin; his beloved grandchildren: Megan, Ryan and Logan; brothers and sisters: Clyde and Joyce Gargus, Jim and Marilee Gargus, Ruby (Gargus) Tokar, David and Serah (Gargus) McDonald, Victor and Marilynn Gargus, Dick Gargus, Glen and Bebet Gargus, Jesse and Evelyn Gargus; his mother-in-law, Ruth Covey; sisters-in-law: Jean (Covey) Hughes and Diana (Covey) Ackley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed dearly by family and friends. All that knew him can rejoice in memories of time spent with a kind and thoughtful man.

Memorial services were 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Montgomery-Viets Funeal Home. Burial was in Lone Rock Cemetery under the direction of Montgomery-Viets Funeral Home of Buffalo. Donations can be made to Seasons Hospice Care or to the American Cancer Society.
