Leonard W. Ashburn, 66, passed away February 23, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center.
A memorial service was held Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens.
Leonard was born May 7, 1944, in Lamoni, Iowa. He told wonderful stories about growing up in Southern Iowa. He was a kind and gentle soul. He was a highlight of family reunions, with kids pulling at him from every direction wanting time with Uncle Leonard.
When he was 4 years old, he was helping his mom with the ringer washer. He fed the clothes through the ringer as his mom finished each one. He put his finger too close to the ringers and darn if it didn't take his arm with the shirt. It pulled his arm all the way up to the elbow before he hollered, too afraid to make his mom angry. It was several months before his arm healed. Uncle Leonard said it turned black and stayed that way a long time.
He retired from the state of Iowa as a weights and measures inspector. Leonard enjoyed fishing on the Des Moines river in Boone county.
Some of Leonard's ashes were placed near his favorite fishing spot, the Kate Shelley bridge in Boone County, Iowa.
