William Dale Spellman was the son of William Everett Spellman and Inez Fredericka (Strauss) Spellman. Dale eloped with Joan Louise Kanaly to Ortonville, Minnesota on the 4th of September 1954, then married her again in a family ceremony on the 19th of December 1954 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They were madly in love until the day he died. They had eight children: Joni Dale (Spellman) Krause, Jill Anette (Spellman) Tolkinen, Melanie Joi (Spellman) Standefer, William Everett Spellman II, Clay Kanaly Spellman, Clint Kampman Spellman, Melissa Jan (Spellman) Herman, Clell Burnarr Spellman.
Dale was a Private in the US Army. Because of his Seventh-day Adventist religion, Dale was a conscientious objector. He was an orderly in a military hospital.
Dale attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He graduated from Northern State University. Dale taught math and science in Isabel, Stratford and Castlewood, South Dakota. He worked for Boeing in Seattle, Washington. Dale came home and went to work for his dad as a painter. He later took over Spellman Painters. Their motto was "Neat and Complete". If you wanted a job done right, you called Spellman Painters. They mostly did large commercial jobs.
Dale was truly a Renaissance Man. His interests were many and varied. He loved gardening, canning, cooking, health foods, the trampoline, gymnastics, tennis, skating, tobogganning, birding, nature, camping, reading, chess, carpentry, and especially art. He was good at it all. Dale could fix anything, often better than new. Many times when he needed a specific tool, he would invent one or vastly improve one. His real passion was art. He was an accomplished self taught artist, working mostly in acrylics. He had a one man show at Dacotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen.
Dale truly loved the Lord and lived his life accordingly; helping many people, friends and strangers alike.
Dale developed myelodysplastic syndrome which later turned into leukemia. He also suffered a severe case of West Nile virus at this time. While hopitalized for an intestinal surgery, Dale developed pneumonia and died.
