This is for my Daddy, Anthony Red. He passed away on October 9th, due to an automobile accident on his way to work. It was exactly one month from the passing of our mother, Teresa Lowe Ferrell. Two weeks before my dad passed away, my dad, my brother, and I went to the fair together. I will ALWAYS cherish that short time I had with him. I loved riding that one ride with Daddy. We laughed the whole time and took lots of pictures. I always worried about him because I loved him so much. I always wanted things to be good for him. After Mama passed away, things weren't exactly "good," because we were still grieving over Mama and trying to start our family up again. What was good was his heart. He tried every way he could to provide for me and my brother like a father would do. He didn't want us to be sad and checked on us several times a day. Our clearest memories of Daddy are when he was holding us 30 days earlier at Mama's funeral.
Daddy had a good personality. He was a little sarcastic and liked telling jokes. He was very particular about his things. He didn't share personal items like a toothbrush or soap, but did eat after me at the fair! At one time his house was extremely neat and organized, but over time that changed. ha. He loved music and music videos; especially Pearl Jam and old rock. In high school he sang, and I wish I would have inherited the good voice from him, but I didn't! He loved sweet tea and a good home cooked meal. He always sat at the table to eat. Daddy was also a hard worker. His hands were rough and portrayed the years of welding that he did in his life. On several occasions, Daddy would make figures out of metal while he was at work. He made an angel, a Jesus figure, and an Ole Miss item. Daddy came across tough, but was truly very tender hearted. He kept telling me that we just have to be strong. He cried a lot after Mama passed away, and promised to keep her grave pretty. Now that he is gone, we will make sure his grave is kept pretty as well.
It is still a shock that we are dealing with such a tragedy, but we also know that God always takes people at the perfect time. It may not have been perfect timing to us because that would be never. It's human nature to want your loved ones with you always, but no one ever lives a minute more or a minute less than God intended them to. I sleep at night knowing that Mama and Daddy are together in heaven and want the best for their family down below. WE LOVE YOU DADDY WITH ALL OF OUR HEART.
The last text message I got from Daddy was at 10:55 p.m. on October 8th. It said, "I am home and ok. I love you." Now looking back at it, he really is at HOME with Jesus and everything will be just fine.
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free,
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard him call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things I too, will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow;
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief;
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me;
God wanted me now, he set me free.
