W.D. Baldwin who was the last of the real pioneer grocerymen in Neodesha, as well as one of the oldest merchants in Wilson county, died at his home, corner of Sixth and Iowa streets, in this city Wednesday February 21, 1917 11:45 o'clock am of pneumonia, after a sickness of about 10 days, aged 68 years 2 months and 20 days. Mr Baldwin has always been a strong and healthy man until a few months ago when his relatives noticed a decline in his physical condition. It was always hard for him to give up and he stayed at the store perhaps longer than he should when he commenced to feel badly a couple of weeks ago. His death has cast a gloom over our community.........
1000 people attended the funeral held at the Methodist Church in Neodesha Feb 25 at 2:00 pm according to the Neodesha news clipping. States "was one of the most largely attended funerals ever held in Wilson county".
Pall Bearers were: L.S. Elwell, W.L. Leffingwell, Geo W. Colyar, F.P. Lombard, R.F. Foster and Israel Wilson. Honorary pall bearers [Knights of Pythias members] were: Chas. Ayars, Al. Barnett and Geo. Scudder of Neodesha and John Reagan, Fritz Koch and Geo. Verschere of Fredonia.
There were nearly 100 automobiles in the funeral procession.

WILLIAM D. BALDWIN, dealer in fancy and staple groceries, queensware, etc., etc., was born in Madison County, Ohio, December 1, 1848, son of Henry and Mary F. Baldwin. He was raised on a farm and came direct from his native county to Kansas in November, 1877. He opened a grocery and provision store in December of the same year and has been engaged in the business ever since. He was married in Fayette County, Ohio, January 28, 1878, to Ella K. Cook, and by this union has three children -- Lucy Lorrette, William Henry, and an infant. Mr. Baldwin is a successful merchant and one of the representative men of Neodesha.
