Brothers and Sisters:
Vern is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His love and his life will be cherished and missed by all.
Vern was a devoted father and grandfather.
He was a former United States Navy submarine veteran who served on the USS Cavalla SSK24.
He was employed at the Refugio County Memorial Hospital for 23 years as the director of Radiology and in the Radiology field for over 40 years until his retirement.
Vern was active in the Sub-Vets Sea Turtle Base, Refugio Lodge No. 190, and loved spending time with his family, friends , traveling and with his dog, Roxy.
Vern declined any funeral services and wished that each individual remember him in their own special way by the time, moments and memories shared together.
Vern fought a courageous three year battle with various health problems after defeating cancer.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Emile Salloum and his caring staff at Spohn Cancer Center.
The family also thanks the wonderful staff at Refugio Memorial Hospital for their support and donations and the staff at Mission Ridge for their kindness during his short stay.
"It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you; it's what you leave behind you when you go."
My Notes (Diane Miller)
I met Vern via telephone and I have to say I instantly liked this man who is a family member of mine on my Grandpa Ray's side.
He was so much like my grandfather in giving of his time and any information he could give to me about my Grandfather's family.
Vern is the one who sent me not only information but pictures of my G-Grandfather Daniel when he was in the Civil War, copy (type written) of my G-Grandfather Daniel's Journal and many pictures of family members.
Not only did he send all this info to me, Vern made sure he sent this out to me before he went to the Hospital, for the last time. Perhaps he knew it would be the last time.
Vern and I spent a few hours now and then on the phone and I would tell him about his grandmother and he would tell me stories about the family and together we laughed about some of the content of G-Grandfather Daniels Journal.
Vern,....... give hugs to all the Wise Family who you have met in Heaven and enjoy what the Lord prepared for you just before your arrival.
I'll see you when I see you.
