The bio as read at his funeral 10-3-2009.

Martin V. Ashlock - Co. B, 8th Tenn. Infantry

Born in 1840, Martin was the 17th child of Thomas Ashlock and his wife, Nancy Elizabeth (Pruitt) from Overton County, TN. Altogether, he was one of 23 children and 2 step-children. Three of his brothers would also enlist in the service to the Confederacy. Young Martin was descended from patriots who fought with Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812, so it was no surprise that he enlisted at the tender age of 19 on May 24, 1861 as a private in Capt. W.B. Petty's Company B, of the 8th TN Infantry. "Overton Blues". A young life full of promise, as he set out from TN in mid-July, headed north to this far off place, no doubt unprepared for the cold, harsh winters of the mountains in western Virginia, to die December 4, 1861 of disease. Far from home and a mother's tender care, or a sweetheart's fond caress. Martin Ashlock willingly laid down his life on the altar of sacrifice in defense of family, fireside and faith.
