David A. Zysk, Jr. 33, a dedicated and beloved staff member of Preble Street Resource Center of Portland, died unexpectedly on November 8, 2015. David was kind, a sensitive listener, and a tireless advocate for change for those suffering from substance abuse. David worked with clients and staff at Preble Street for almost three years with incredible positive energy and treated everyone with dignity and respect.

David was born in Sanford on April 14, 1982 the son of David A. Zysk, Sr. and Mary (Creel) Jeralds. He was very serious and intelligent. David was always a very caring and sensitive human being. Even as a child, he would contemplate ways to change the world. He always challenged the status quo. David enjoyed camping, hiking, organic gardening and reading. He was the consummate fisherman; was never bothered by the cold while outdoors ice fishing with his family and friends.

For many years, David struggled with drug addiction. He fought long and hard to overcome the daily struggles from that lifestyle. He had been sober for four years and was working towards his Bachelor’s in Social Work at USM, in Portland, maintaining a 3.98 GPA. David would have graduated in May of 2016 and his personal goal was to complete his Master’s degree. David channeled his energy into his family, school and work within the recovery program at Preble. David’s future dreams included owning property with his family and living off the land; organic gardening and becoming a good steward of mother earth. He also dreamed of working as a wilderness camp counselor with the youth struggling with addiction and also working with public policy. One of David’s goals was to change policies and public perception with people with Health disparities and drug addiction.

David was an active and devoted Uncle to his three nephews, Jordan, Brayden and Kobe. He enjoyed video games and playing sports with them and coaching at the basketball tournaments. David shared many times that these boys helped save his life. David met and fell in love with Aubreyanna Boston and together they had a son, Jaxson Cale Zysk. David became a proud and loving father.

David was a good man. He used his experience as a person in recovery to make genuine human connections with people he served. David’s spirit has begun a new journey. . . We will miss and love you until we meet again.

David is lovingly survived by his mother, Mary Jeralds of Lebanon; his son, Jaxson Cale Zysk and partner Aubreyanna Boston and her daughter Ava of Wells; his sister, Carly Zysk and her children, Jordan, Brayden and Kobe of Lebanon; his step father, Mark L. Jeralds of Lebanon; his maternal grandmother, Aline Creel of Waterbury, CT; his aunt, Mary Zysk of CT: his uncle, David Creel and his family, Tedi and Aliza Creel of Waterbury, CT and many beloved friends, co-workers and clients.

David was predeceased by his father, David A. Zysk, Sr. and by his grandfather, William Creel.

A Calling Hour will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 1 – 2 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at the Alfred Parish Church, 12 Kennebunk Rd., in Alfred.
