Deacon John Alexander Sr., 93, of Petersburg, Va., made his transition into eternal rest peacefully at his residence on Saturday, June 29, 2013.

John was born on May 20, 1920, in Prince George County, Va., to the late Mr. Christopher Alexander and Mrs. Lucinda James Alexander. He was educated in the Prince George County School System.

Deacon Alexander also attended D. Webster Davis School, which was situated on the campus of Virginia State University, and took up tailoring. John was employed by Titmus Optical, and Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. for 27 years. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va., where he became a deacon on Nov. 19, 1989, and served as chaplain of the Deacon Board from 1993 to Nov. 20, 1997. Zion Baptist Church honored Deacon John Alexander Sr. as father of the year on June 16, 2002.

Deacon Alexander is preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Carrie B. Alexander, and one son, Garry Alexander.

Left to cherish his memories, three sons, John Alexander Jr., Randolph Alexander and Christopher C. Alexander IV, all of Petersburg, Va.; two daughters, Mary E. Hansard-Woodfin and Crystal A. Alexander, both of Petersburg, Va.; one sister, Dorothy Branch of Northern Virginia; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services for Deacon John Alexander Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Zion Baptist Church, 225 Bryne St., Petersburg, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Archie German officiating and the Rev. Dr. Andrew White delivering the eulogy. The interment will be in the Dinwiddie Memorial Park, Petersburg, Va. Deacon John Alexander Sr. will lie in repose from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

There will be a public viewing from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at the J.L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment, 25824 Greensville Ave., Petersburg, Va.
