Edythe was the youngest child of Myrlin and Lillie Swanson Hahnenstein, sister of Margaret and Duane. She grew up in Joliet, Illinois and moved to Silver Spring, Maryland with her first husband, Albert Gombas, where they had a daughter, [Living]. While working for the Voice of America in Washington, DC, she met and married (2) Charles Jacob Affelder. A talented artist, Edythe created masterful Sumi-e watercolors and cloisonne jewelry. She was a wonderful cook, and her fruit pies and pot roasts are still legendary among those who had the good fortune to sit down to dinner with this lovely lady. She had a dazzling smile, and will be forever in our hearts and memories.
