Charles E. Bechtel, 85, of Fremont died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at his home.

He was born May 27, 1924, in Alvo to Royal and Ruth (Sutton) Bechtel. He moved to Fremont as a child and was a graduate of Fremont High School. He attended the Open Bible College in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1946 until graduating in 1949. He attended Midland College in Fremont from 1952 to 1954 and then returned to the Open Bible College where he taught until returning to Fremont in 1958. He began his career with Fremont Public Schools in 1959. He taught at Clarkson School in Fremont and became principal there in 1964. He then went on to be principal at Northside School and Davenport School in Fremont. Charles and his wife were antique dealers for 35 years and traveled the western half of the United States participating in antique shows.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Mary A. Arvanetis on July 16, 1944, in Fremont. She died Nov. 28, 2004.

He was a member of the Fremont Church of God.

Survivors include: a son, Kevin (and wife, Brenda) Bechtel of Fremont; a daughter, Karen (and husband, Mark) Laubscher of Fremont; a sister, Maxine Fredenburg of Fremont; two brothers, Leonard (and wife, Esther) Bechtel of Fremont and Roland Bechtel of East Moline, Ill.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the Revs. Roland Bechtel, Jon Jacoby and Larry Sparks officiating. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military graveside services conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.
