Elmer Blackburn Dies Suddenly
Early Last Saturday Morning
Only Few Knowing Of His Illness.

The community of Hillsdale was cast into gloom on last Saturday morning Dec. 18, 1920, when the news spread of the sudden death of Willard Elmer Blackburn.
On Friday, the day before he and his brother Alfred drove to their sister's home in Rice Lake and on his return home that evening he retired, apparently as well as usual. His wife awakened next morning about six o'clock and discovered him struggling for breath, and as soon as possible the doctor was called, but he had passed away before the doctor arrived.

Deceased was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Blackburn. He was born in Rochester, Indiana, Nov. 5, 1877, where he lived until three years of age, when they moved to Barron county.

During the last sixteen years he resided in Hillsdale where he followed farming. At the age of 12 years he united with the Free Baptist church of Maple Grove and afterwards transferring his membership to the Hillsdale Baptist church of which he was a member at the time of his death.

Having grown up in the community, he is known and respected by all his friends and neighbors as quiet and unassuming and yet always ready to help in any way in his power. He will be missed by all who knew him and especially by his immediate family. He was united in marriage to Miss Emma White in November, 1899. To that union there was born six children, Nina, who is now Mrs. Floyd Smart, Valda, Howard and Carol, two having died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, Mrs. Emma Blackburn and four children, his mother, two sisters, namely Mrs. John Mossman, Centralia, Wash., Mrs. Almon Edes, of Rice Lake and one brother Alfred of Hillsdale, a number of nieces and nephews, two grand children and a great number of friends.

He passed away at the age of 43 years, one month and 13 days. The funeral was held from the home at Hillsdale on Friday, Dec. 24, 1920, and his remains being laid to rest in the Wayside cemetery Barron. [Published Friday, December 24, 1920 in the Barron County Shield, Barron, Wisconsin.]
