He remained at home, assisting on his father's farm until 1859, the year of his removal to Illinois and of his locating in Malta Township, where he operated as a farmer on his own account, making frequent visits to his native county.
He was married there March 27, 1880, to Annie M. Pulver. She was born March 6, 1842 in Ghent, Columbia Co., NY, and is the daughter of James and Sarah (Stupplebeem) Pulver, farmers, and of German descent. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. S. took possession of their home in Malta Township, where the former has an undivided interest in his father's estate and also 160 acres of land in Iowa.
