OBIT: "FUNERAL SERVICE FOR J.L. BLOTE, THUR. AUGUST 24, 1939": Funeral services for Louie Blote were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock, at the home and at the Congregational Church, conducted by Rev. George Turner and attended by a very large crowd of sympathetic friends and neighbors, many of whom were unable to get into the church. Delegations of Elks from Brookings and Watertown were present in a body and assisted in the service.

Honorary Pall bearers were John EISNACH, Henry JACKSON, J.C. ARTHUR, Julius BAKER, George MCMANNERS and W.E. WHITTEMORE.

Burial in HILLCREST was postponed until Monday morning because of a message being received shortly before the service stating that Mr. Blote's daughter, Iva, and son, Erwin (Ervin) had been delayed eight hours on their trip from the west coast (CA, OR) and would not arrive until late Sunday evening. Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer FRICKE (Alice) and son, Dale of Brookings; Louis OLSON of Arlington, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred RITLUFF and daughters and Mr. and Mrs. P.E.PETERSON of Oldham.

Johann Louie BLOTE was born in Obendorf [Oberndorf] Germany on August 12, 1877, and died at Estelline on August 16, 1939, after a short illness, being 62 years and four days old. He was the son of Ludwig and Margritha [Margarethe] (BLOHM) BLOTE of Lippe, Detmault, Germany, his father being a brick factory foreman. His mother passed away last Jun 9th at the age of 94 years. Louie learned the flour milling business in Germany. He came to the United States when he was 16 years old, landing in Marionet, Wisconsin, and resided with his uncle Herman BLOHM for a time and then with his uncle, Paul JOHNSON on whose farm he worked. Leaving Wisconsin, he came to BROOKINGS where he worked on a farm for two years. He attended State College for a short while then worked in Olson's drug store for three years. Being of an ambitious nature he decided to enter the butchering business, securing employment in the Mike Orns meat market, and continuing in this establishment for 9 years. On Feb. 5, 1902 he was untied in marriage to Grace PALMER of BROOKINGS, and to this union 4 children were born; Iva, Alice, Ervin [Erwin] and Lucille. His wife preceded him in death August 19, 1911 and Lucille in Youth 1928. On May 1 1906, he married Mathilda OLSON of Oldham and to this union five children were born, three dying in infancy, and Donalda at the age of four; Joyce, 9 years old survives him. Feeling his illness coming upon him he left for the MAYO CLINIC @ Rochester, MN on Aug. 9th to seek medical advice. He returned Aug. 12, and failing to recover from the exhausting trip passed away on the evening of August 16th.

Deceased leaves to mourn his loss, his widow Mrs. Mathilda "Mae" Blote; his two daughters and son by his former marriage, Iva (Cleveland) MURRAY of Ashland, OR; Alice FRICKE of Brookings, and Irwin [Erwin] BLOTE of San Francisco, CA; his daughter Joyce, by his second marriage; one brother Carl BLOTE of Estelline [sa: Manchester]; one sister Sophie LUDWIG who resided in Germany; six grand children; one nephew in Germany, and three nephews and three nieces in the United States. Louie Blote was a loving husband and father. By his genial disposition he made for himself many friends who dearly feel his loss. He will long be remembered for the many acts of kindness he performed. Of him it may be said "he was a good neighbor." Card of thanks... we wish to extend our most sincere thanks to the many kind friends who assisted us before the death and at the funeral of our dear husband and father. We also greatly appreciated the visits at the home during his last illness. Mrs. J.L.BLOTE and Joyce, Mrs. Alice FRICKE, Mrs. Iva Cleveland MURRAY, and Erv[w]in BLOTE.
