My Aunt Trula was simply a wonderful person. I can remember those days back in June, 1956, when she'd try to keep me occupied. I had gone to spend a month with my Grandparents, Rufus and Quinnie Lawson. My Aunt Trula was still living at home at that time. I specifically remember that one special day when Aunt trula was spending her time with just me.
She had invented a game for me. It was enough to keep me "still" for a short period of time (I was a handful). As we sat in the porch swing on the front porch of the home at the bottom of the hill off State Road 66, on that warm June day. She told me, "Look at the road up above...Now, the next vehicle that comes around that curve from Collins' Store, down the road, toward Walt Lawson's place is yours. The next one will be mine." We were to alternate back and forth from then on...
Well, the next vehicle that came around the curve up on the hill was a beat up old, rusty pickup. We'd both laugh that I got stuck with such a jalopy. The next one was my Aunt Trula's. It was a new and shiny car. She'd laugh as I was so envious at the car she got in this game.
This lasted for longer than I ever knew at that time and it was a dear memory that will last with me until the day I die. She took the time "with me"...What a special lady she was and she proved it to me with something as simple as that. She probably never knew how that day would stick in my mind for the rest of my life and how special it made her to me.
