Thomas was born in Illinois and moved with his wife, Mary, to Colorado about 1898. Shortly afterward he went to work for Olinger Mortuary as caretaker for their horses used to pull funeral coaches. He became a coach driver and later driver of the first motorized hearses. Thomas was the driver for the hearse in the funeral of Buffalo Bill Cody in 1917. He later studied embalming and worked in that profession until his retirement about 1945. (Contributed by his late grandson, Jack Marriott)

Thomas Bates Recitation of the rosary for Thomas Bates, Denver resident for 50 years who died Tuesday, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Olinger Mortuary, Boulder St.
Requiem mass will be sung at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Magdalene Church and burial will follow in Mount Olivet.
Mr. Bates, who lived at 2867 Benton St., died at his home after a week-long illness.
He was born in Auburn, Ill., May 7, 1873, and received his schooling there. He farmed for a short while in Albia, Iowa, when a young man before moving to Denver. He was married in Albia to Mary Burns and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here last April 19.
He had been employed as a mortician at the Olinger Mortuaries for 41 years prior to his retirement five years ago.
He was an ardent hunter and fisherman and pursued those hobbies throughout the Colorado Rockies. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and St. Mary Magdalene Church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, William, Denver; three daughters, Mrs. Marguerite Hizel, McCook, Neb., Mrs. Genevieve McNealey, San Francisco, and Mrs. Helen Marriott, Denver; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
