Jesse was born on January 18, 1855 in Jay County, Indiana to John and Catherine (Hicks) Curtice. He married Laura Arabelle "Belle" Selby in Rose Bank, Staten Island, New York on December 1, 1891. After the wedding they boarded a steamer ship and went to Europe for a year long honeymoon. They had one daughter: Miriam Selby (Curtice) Dodge (1893-1966).
Jesse and his brother William H. Curtice were about 18 years old when they took to the road as salesman and promoters. Jesse held many Patents and filed his first application in 1876. He resided in Henry County, Kentucky until his marriage to Belle. He and Belle made their home in Indepedence and Kansas City, Missouri.
Jesse raised prize winning Hereford cattle on his ranch.
He was also involved in real estate enterprises in Kansas City, banking business in several towns in Oklahoma.
