Elmer D. Arola, 87, Virginia, formerly of Idington, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at his home.

He was born on December 31, 1921, the 11th child to Marcus and Hannah (Nelimarkka) Arola on the family homestead in Angora. He grew up in the Angora area and married Helen on June 17, 1950 at the old Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook.

Earlier Elmer & Helen operated a dairy farm in Idington and also raised Polled Herefords. He was the only person in the area with a threshing machine and did custom threshing for local farmers. He later purchased a combine and did custom combing. Elmer held many different jobs in the 1950's. He worked for Theil Bryer's Construction and Picek Construction. Some of the building projects he worked on were the Virginia Memorial Building, Virginia Municipal Power Plant, and the Lookout Mountain Ski Hill. He was a blaster in laying the railroad grade for Erie Mining Company. He started employment at Staver's Foundry on June 1, 1962 and retired on June 1, 1984 after 22 years as a core maker. Elmer was an accomplished sawyer. He owned his own sawmill, harvested timber, and sawed it into lumber. He built his own retirement home in Idington in the late 1970's. The home is now occupied as Autumn Adult Foster Home Care, run by his son and daughter-in-law. His hobbies were trout fishing and wood working. He made many craft items to give as gifts and exhibited them at craft fairs. He also helped his wife Helen with catering for many occasions. They have made their home in Virginia since 1992.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Helen; a son; 3-daughters; 6 grandchildren; 5-great-grandchildren; 4-step-grandchildren; 1 great step-granddaughter; his godchild, along with numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son Dale Arola; 5-brothers Hans, Leonard, Matt, and twins Marcus and William Arola. 5- sisters; Ester Laakkonen, Helia Johnson, Rena Granholm, Aili Aho, and Edna Kaurala.

Interment will be in the Idington Cemetery.
