John Henry "Jack" Baker was the son of Charles and Charlotte Chambers Baker. His parents died in 1907 and 1908 leaving their children orphaned.
Percy, the oldest child, was in the Merchant Marines. He enlised in the Army in WWI and was killed in France. Sister Charlotte lived with their grandparents until her marriage when she emigrated to Canada.
Jack, and his brothers Walter and Charles were brought to the Dr. Barnardo Homes Orphanage where they were sent to live with Canadian farm families. Younger sister Rose remained in England but later was taken to Canada when her brother Charles married.
The three brothers left England on 9 September 1909 aboard the S.S. Scotia. They were placed in homes within eight miles of each other. Jack first stayed with the Swayze family, but was young and probably more work than help so they didn't keep him. He was next with two old German people for four years and then went to Woodbridge with an older couple. He recalls he never had any young friends.
Jack married Erma Mae Armstrong, daughter of Edward and Ida Mae Smart Armstrong.
He worked for 43 years with the Silverwood Dairies as an engineer, specializing in refrigeration.
Children: Donald Richard, Dorothy Phyllis, Robert John, James Dale, Meta Katherine and Mae Armstrong.
Mae died 18 March 1984 in Chatham, Ontario. Jack died 22 October 1988 at Chatham.
