Birth: 1864
Death: Apr. 3, 1907

Charles was born in Tunbridge Wells in Kent in 1864, although no record of his birth or parents have been found. He died 3 Apr 1907, age 43, at 101 The Dwellings, Chadwell St. Mary. He was listed as a caretaker.
He is buried in an unmarked grave at St Mary churchyard with his wife, Charlotte who died in the following year.

Charles lodged with the Charles Chambers family about 1886, possibly as early as 1882.
He married their daughter, Charlotte Chambers, who was born in Bradford, Yorkshire Jul. 28, 1872. They were married on 25th December 1890 in the church whose churchyard is now their joint resting place. Charles father is listed as "Charles Baker, deceased" on the 1890 marriage certificate.

In 1891, Charles and Charlotte are living at 101 Toronto Road, Chadwell St. Mary, apparently with her parents Charles Chambers, Sophia Chambers, and siblings Walter, Bertram, and Sarah.

In 1901, Charles and Charlotte are listed in the census (name is mis-spelled as Bakes) at 24 Quebec Road, Chadwell St. Mary with children Percy, Charles, Daisy and Walter. Charles is listed as a dock labourer, age 36.

Charles was very fond of sport and most of his spare time was spent in shooting wild fowl of which there were plenty in those days on the marshlands of the River Thames. He was a caretaker at 98 Tilbury Buildings, Tilbury, Essex, in 1906 He died 3 April 1907 of "chronic interstitial nephritis and pneumonia. He was 43 years old at the time of his death.

Charlotte died 16 July 1908, age 36, in a London hospital of "diabetes, melitus, and exhaustion"...Uncle Walter said of a kidney infection.

Chadwell St. Mary is a small hamlet just north of what is now Tilbury. At that date, Chadwell St. Mary was larger than Tilbury which was just now growing since the opening up of the Docks there in 1886. Both towns are now part of Grays Thurrock.
The couple had seven children all born in Tilbury:
Percy Edward who was born 27th March 1891. He was killed in Action in France in the Great War-see his entry on this site.
Daisy Annie Rose born 23rd October 1896
Charles born 30th March 1897
Walter was born 5th March 1899 at 24 Quebec Road in what was then in Chadwell St. Mary, but is now Tilbury. Interestingly, he was to have that Canadian connection later in his young life because he was shipped off to Canada to start a new life as one of the Dr. Barnardo's Home Children. He was joined by his brothers Charles and John, and he and Charles would be sent to France with the Canadian Forces. They survived the Great War.
Charlotte born 9th September 1901
John Henry born 15th August 1903
Sarah Rose born 14th November 1905
