Sarah Elizabeth Brown survived an attempted abortion at 36 weeks gestation performed by Dr. George Tiller at his clinic Women's Health Care of Wichita. The needle filled with potassium chloride which was intended to stop her heart pierced her brain instead. She was born alive at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS two days later on July 15, 1993. She weighed 7 lbs, 5 oz.
Sarah was adopted by Bill and MaryKay Brown, against the advice of hospital staff who said she would not survive. The Browns continue to speak publicly about their daughter despite the imposition of a gag order requested by Tiller.
The toxins permanently blinded Sarah and caused her to have a stroke at six months old that rendered her unable to speak. Despite this, she was happy, she laughed, and engaged with those in her life. When she died of kidney failure at the age of 5, she was surrounded by family. 800 people attended her funeral.
