Aaron was one of several children born to Thomas & Ellender Sutphin Blackard of Grayson & Patrick Co VA.
Aaron and family lived in the Shuff community of Patrick County. Aaron and Mary raised several children including Thomas Jackson, Sarah Alice, Charley Tobe, James Samuel, Peter Riley and Robert Lee.

While serving in the 24 Virginia Infantry Co I, he fought in the battle of Frazier's Farm. He sustained an injury resulting in partial paralysis of his left hand and arm.

Aaron and Mary were married on Valentines Day, 1867, in Patrick Co VA
