|Death: ||Jun. 30, 2008|
Born on Vashon Island, Washington on March 31, 1909 and died June 30, 2008. She was the second daughter of the Nishimuras, a family of farmers in Des Moines, Washington that raised vegetables and strawberries, She was married in 1926 and raised two children, James and Patsy.
At the start of World War II, Peggie, being a "Neisi", was sent with her family to interment camps in Pinedale and Tule Lake, California from 1942-1943 then to Minidoka, Idaho from 1943-1945. As noted in her must-read autobiography, "Walk With Me Through My Life" prejudice did not end with leaving camp. She faced repeated discrimination in Chicago when trying to locate housing. In 1955, Peggie moved home to Seattle where she cared for her aging parents.
In spite of life's many set-backs, Peggy found joy with many hobbies including hula and square dancing as well as gardening. She tried to never miss watching a Mariners baseball game on TV or listening on the radio - win or lose.
Peggie is preceded in death by her parents Kumataro and Kaju Nishimura, sister Nellie, brother Henry and her husband Rochford "Jack" Bain. She is survived by her children James Yorita and Patsy Riley, two sisters, Emily and Hanni, one brother Tom, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, one step grandchild and two step great-grandchildren. She will be forever missed by family and many beloved neighbors and friends.
Memorial Services will be held in the Lakeridge Lutheran Church, 7465 S. 112th Street, Seattle, WA 98178 on July 14, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. She will be inturned at Tahoma National Cemetery with her husband at a later date.
