James L. Abercrombie, 88, a resident of Huntsville for 60 years, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011.

Born in Cullman County, Alabama, Mr. Abercrombie was married to Jane Daffin Abercrombie for 58 years before she died in 2003. They were charter members of the Whitesburg Baptist Church. He served his country from the age of 17 during World War II as part of the 1340th Engineer Combat Battalion, starting as a foot soldier receiving battlefield commission to rank of officer with citations for valor and two Purple Hearts. After his service, he was employed by the Corps of Engineers, both in the United States and several foreign countries. During his employment, he received two Exceptional Service Awards, the highest award a civilian can receive.

Survivors include five children and their families, Betty Jane Gonzales, JoAnn Abercrombie, James L. Abercrombie Jr., Judy Abercrombie and Charles Abercrombie; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sister, Betty; brother, Wayne; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, Alabama.

I remember Mr. Abercrombie as a fine gentleman with a big smile. The taught construction courses for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Training Directorate.
