Son of John Thomas Clements (s/o William A., s/o Bennett Hanson Jr. s/o Bennett Hanson Sr., s/o William s/o of John the immigrant - England) and Priscilla Hagan (d/o Benjamin Jr., s/o Benjamin Sr., s/o Thomas Jr., s/o Thomas Hagan the immigrant - Ireland). The 1870 census shows Melvina Dant (15, in school) living with her family (parents John Sylvester and Martha Melvina (nee Payne) Dant). Nearby, Alfred Clements (17) is living with his cousin's family, George Clayton, and next door to the Edward Pierce Clayton family. Alfred's maternal aunt, Barbara Hagan, was mother to George and Edward Clayton, and Edward was married to Alfred's older half-sister, Mary Catherine (her mother being Elizabeth Cissell). Living in the same neighborhood may have led to Alfred meeting Melvina and they were married on 01 Jan 1877 in McLean County, Kentucky. Alfred was employed at The Owensboro Wagon Company. Suffering from tuberculosis, Alfred passed away at the TB hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Nickname "Poolie" - Alfred's father, John Thomas, was 15 when he was orphaned in Spencer County, Kentucky. At that point, the under-aged Clements children were placed under the care of guardians. To give John Thomas an education and occupation, he was indentured to Henry Pool to learn the art of blacksmithing (by Indenture dated 13 Feb 1826, Spencer Co.). The nickname more than likely came from the relationship formed between John Thomas, a young impressionable boy without a father, and Henry Pool (who may have been called Poolie) over the course of the five year indenture. Both John Thomas Clements and Henry Pool eventually migrated, separately with their families, from Spencer Co. to Daviess Co., Kentucky c. 1850. Alfred Clements is listed under the name of Poolie in the 1900 Census in Daviess County, Kentucky.
