Asa H. Beckman of Seabrook, aged 22, unmarried, was struck by a train on the Boston & Maine railroad, near Frenchman's lane, Portsmouth, late Saturday night and he died at an early hour Sunday morning at the Cottage hospital in that city.
Mr. Beckman was found about 1 o'clock Sunday morning. He was still breathing. The police station was notified and the ambulance sent to the scene.
The unconscious man was removed to the Cottage hospital but never recovered consciousness, dying shortly before 3 o'clock. He had been struck on the head and a fractured skull was one of the many injuries.
There was nothing on the body by which it could be identified, and it was not until late Saturday [Sunday] afternoon that the father of the young man went to Portsmouth looking for his son, that it was identified. He recognized the body and at once made arrangements for the removal to Seabrook yesterday.
Beckman was seen about Portsmouth Saturday eveing and was at the depot late inquiring if there was a train for Newburyport. On being answered in the negative he evidently started to walk home, and either attempted to board the local freight which left there at 10:30 or was struck by the Bar Harbor express due at 11:38. The body was found at 12:45 so that in any case he must have lain in the tracks for some time after he was injured.
