Frank L. Ayers, 80, of Vinton, died Friday, November 3, 2006 at his residence. F.L. was a lifetime member of Bonsack Baptist Church where he had also served as Secretary of Sunday School for over 20 years. He served in the United States Army during World War II and later retired after 40 years of service from the Norfolk Southern Railroad. F.L. also played the dobro in a bluegrass band for many years at the Roanoke Fiddle & Banjo Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Catron Ayers and Frank L. Ayers, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Eula B. Ayers; four children, Sue Abernathy, Mary Lynch and husband Gary, Debbie Hartigan and husband Jimmy, Kathy Stafford and husband Mike; seven grandchildren, Mark Abernathy, Amy Abernathy, Windy Crowder, Laura Lynch, Valerie Hartigan, Brandon Stafford and Casey Stafford; one great-granddaughter, Gwen Hartigan; one sister, Jeanette Smith and husband Carl; also five nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, November 6, 2006 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Dr. Robert G. Moore III and the Rev. Scot Finley officiating. Burial will follow in Glade Creek Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Carilion Hospice. Special thanks to Carilion Hospice, Dale Weddle and Suzanne Mossler.
