Master Technical Sgt. Calm first joined the United States Marine Corps. in August of 1934. In 1938 he was sent to the Marine Corps Reserve, but was placed on active duty in August of 1941, before World War II. As an aircraft mechanic he was stationed at the Air Station in Quantico, VA and Philadelphia Navy Yard. He was honorably discharged from the Corps. in March of 1946. He was awarded the Marine Corps. Good Conduct medal with second award bar and the Marksman badge for rifle and pistol-D. He was also eligible for the World War II Victory medal and the American Theater Campaign medal.
