Mr. Findley first joined the Iowa National Guard in July of 1891 as a Private with the job of Hospital Steward. He was promoted through the ranks and eventually retired as a Brigadier General in April of 1930. He was a Drake University graduate, Class of 1895, where he earned his MD degree. After his retirement from the Iowa National Guard and the United States Army, he became the Sheriff of Polk County, Iowa. He was awarded the Philippine Campaign medal (while serving with the 51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry), the Phillipine Congressional medal (51st Iowa Vol. Inf.), the Spanish War Service medal (51st Iowa Vol. Inf.), the Mexican Border Service medal (while serving with the 3rd Iowa Infantry) and the Mexican Service Campaign medal (while serving as a Captain with the 5th US Calvary). He was both a Spanish-American War vet and a World War I vet, making him also eligible for the World War I Victory medal.
